Amanda Serrano Defends Her Titles with Dominance in Puerto Rico

Amanda Serrano demonstrated her supremacy in women’s boxing by successfully defending her WBA and WBO featherweight titles. The fight, held Saturday night at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico, saw Serrano prevail over Reina Tellez by unanimous decision. Two judges scored the fight 97-93, while the third saw it 98-92, awarding a clear victory to the champion. Serrano, with a record of 48-4-1 (30 KOs), returned to the path of victory in her natural category after two consecutive defeats.

I feel incredible [fighting in Puerto Rico], but it’s even better to be back at 126 pounds. It’s been two years since I fought at this weight. So the next fights are going to be much, much better. I finally feel like I gave the fans a show.

Tellez (13-1-1), who accepted the fight with only 15 days’ notice, showed courage against a rival of Serrano’s caliber, a world champion in seven divisions. Despite the defeat, Tellez left a good impression.

I’ve never been in 10 rounds, let alone three minutes, and I did it with one of the best in the world. Against someone I’ve idolized my whole life, I stayed there and fought until the end. So, whatever anyone has to say about me, they can go to sleep. I stayed focused and showed them tonight what it’s all about.

Reina Tellez
Amanda Serrano regained her winning streak with a decisive victory over Reina Tellez on Saturday night, retaining her WBA and WBO featherweight titles. From the first bell, the difference in skill and experience was evident. Serrano combined punches, while Tellez showed resilience, even causing swelling in the champion’s right eye, although due to an accidental clash of heads. Although Serrano’s offense moderated due to the inflammation, her corner kept the eye under control, allowing the champion to regain her rhythm in the second half of the fight. In the fifth round, Serrano focused on Tellez’s body, who remained firm. Despite being far ahead on the scorecards, Serrano sought the knockout in the final round, but Tellez managed to make it to the end, securing future opportunities. At 37 years old, Serrano made it clear that his career continues and that he will remain in his natural weight category, although he avoided mentioning possible rivals.

There are many new girls and new featherweight champions. Maybe someday we can get together and fight each other. I am the unified featherweight champion, and there are other champions out there.

In the co-main event, Stephanie Han (12-0, 3 KOs) retained her WBA lightweight title, achieving a unanimous technical decision over Holly Holm (34-3-3, 9 KOs). The fight, which was held under men’s rules, was stopped in the seventh round due to an accidental headbutt that caused a wound above Han’s right eye, preventing him from continuing. The judges scored the fight 69-65, 69-64, and 68-65. Han dominated the fight from the second round, outstriking Holm with his punch volume and right-hand counter. Holm, 44, who signed with Most Valuable Promotions last year, couldn’t generate much offense, and Han, 35, used her speed to neutralize the former three-division champion.
