Ricky Hatton: Former World Boxing Champion Dies; Investigation Open
The former world boxing champion, Ricky Hatton, was found dead at his home, as revealed in a court hearing on Thursday. The 46-year-old boxer was found unresponsive by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of September 14th at his residence located in Hyde, Greater Manchester, as reported in Stockport Coroner’s Court. The information was provided during a brief 10-minute hearing, in which the investigation into the death of the renowned boxer was opened and adjourned until March. Judge Alison Mutch, senior coroner for Manchester South, stated that the provisional cause of death is hanging. The court heard details about the discovery of Hatton’s body, provided by police forensic officer Alison Catlow. The court was informed that Hatton’s family last saw him on September 12, and that he looked “well”. However, on the morning of September 14, when Hatton did not show up for an event as expected, his manager went to his house to take him to Manchester Airport, from where he was to take a flight to Dubai. The Hatton family assured that the former world champion was “in a good moment”, being a loving father and grandfather with plans for the future, including a comeback fight in Dubai in December, with his bags packed. His passing caused consternation in his family and shock among his followers. Proud of Manchester and a fervent Manchester City supporter, he received tributes from the boxing world and the sports community in general. Last week, personalities such as Liam Gallagher, Oasis frontman, former Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury attended a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral. Hatton, known as “The Hitman”, was loved by thousands of fans for his affable, humble, and joking personality. His energetic fighting style and approachable demeanor made him one of the most popular boxers on both sides of the Atlantic.
