Rules Revealed for the Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis Face-Off
In a press conference held on Monday in New York, Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, unveiled the rules for the highly anticipated November 14th fight between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis.
The showdown, which promises to be electrifying, will unfold as a 10-round exhibition, with each round lasting three minutes. The maximum weight for the fight will be 195 pounds.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the boxers will use 12-ounce gloves during the fight night.
For comparison, boxers competing in the welterweight (147 pounds) and lower weight categories usually use 8-ounce gloves, something Davis is accustomed to.
Paul, for his part, has fought all his fights with 10-ounce gloves, a standard for fights above the welterweight, with the exception of the exhibition against Mike Tyson last November, where both fighters used 14-ounce gloves.Although the fight between Paul and Davis has been classified as an exhibition, which means that the result will not affect the professional records of either of them, there will be three ringside judges to score the fight. If the fight goes the distance, a winner will be determined.
Last week it was announced that the fight was moved from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta to the Kaseya Center in Miami, after Most Valuable Promotions withdrew its application to host the event in Georgia.
Rick Thompson, chairman of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission (GAEC), criticized the holding of the fight due to the weight disparity between the boxers. Thompson stated that the promoter was “promoting something that should not have been done.”
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is the current WBA lightweight champion and weighed 133.8 pounds in his last fight, a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. He has never fought in a weight class above 140 pounds in his professional career.
Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) currently competes at cruiserweight and weighed 199.4 pounds in his June victory over Julio César Chávez Jr. His weight has varied, reaching up to 227.2 pounds for the fight against Tyson and dropping to 183.75 pounds for his February 2023 loss against Tommy Fury.
