Key Rules for the Paul vs. Davis Match

The details of the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis, scheduled for November 14th, have been revealed. Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, was in charge of announcing the regulations at a press conference held on Monday in New York. The match will be held as a 10-round exhibition, with each round lasting three minutes. The maximum weight set for the fight will be 195 pounds, and the boxers will use 12-ounce gloves. It is important to note that, in comparison, boxers competing in the welterweight category (147 pounds) and in lower divisions usually use 8-ounce gloves, an element Davis is accustomed to. For his part, Paul has fought all his matches with 10-ounce gloves, standard for fights above the welterweight, with the exception of the exhibition against Mike Tyson last November, where both contenders used 14-ounce gloves.

Despite being considered an exhibition, which means the result will not affect the boxers’ professional records, three judges will be present in the ring to score the fight, and a winner will be determined if the bout goes the distance. Last week, the change of venue for the event was announced, which was originally going to be held at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, finally moving to the Kaseya Center in Miami, after Most Valuable Promotions withdrew its application to host the fight in Georgia. Rick Thompson, chairman of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission (GAEC), expressed criticism of the fight’s realization due to the weight disparity between the fighters, stating that the promoter was “promoting something they shouldn’t have done.” Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is the current WBA lightweight champion and weighed 133.8 pounds in his last fight, a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. In his professional career, he has never fought in a category above 140 pounds. Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) currently competes in cruiserweight and weighed 199.4 pounds in his June victory against Julio César Chávez Jr. His weight has varied, reaching 227.2 pounds for the fight against Tyson and up to 183.75 pounds in his February 2023 loss to Tommy Fury.
