Parker vs. Wardley: Risk and Reward for the Usyk Challenge

After Oleksandr Usyk’s victory over Daniel Dubois in July, the excitement and desire to be close to the new undisputed heavyweight champion became evident. Officials, personalities, and promoters, including Jake Paul, tried to grab attention. However, Joseph Parker had a more compelling reason to approach Usyk.

The WBO ordered Usyk to face the interim champion. Parker, with an outstanding winning streak, had earned the right to fight Usyk. But an injury to Usyk and his request for more time frustrated Parker, leaving him in a state of uncertainty. Parker, eager to capitalize on his good form, has faced and defeated Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole, the latter by knockout in the second round. This success rekindled his hopes of becoming heavyweight champion for a second time. Instead of waiting, Parker opted for action and will face the undefeated Fabio Wardley in London. A victory would position him even better for a fight with Usyk.

Parker knows the key is to stay active. “I think winning definitely puts you in that position,” Parker said. “But whether you’re going to get it or not is another story altogether. The best approach to this fight is to go out and enjoy it. And when you have fun, everything flows well, flows better, and you can get the job done.” Parker also points out that, although organizations can order fights and promoters can make big announcements, it is Usyk who is in control in the heavyweight division. If Parker defeats Wardley, Usyk could be forced to face him if he wants to fight in the first part of 2026, as Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury seem like unrealistic options until later in the year.

The risk is high. Parker is in a “last chance” situation to become world champion for the second time. Fortunately, he has recent experience against big punchers. Wardley, for his part, demonstrated his power by knocking out Justis Huni in July, despite being behind on the scorecards. Wardley also defeated Frazer Clarke in their rematch.

This matchup promises to be intriguing, as it could cost Parker the opportunity to fight Usyk or leave the Ukrainian champion with no other option but to face him.
