Pacquiao Returns to the Ring: What Awaits the Boxing Icon?

Manny Pacquiao, at 46 years old, showed a notable improvement in his recent fight against Mario Barrios. Although he did not manage to break the record as the oldest boxer to win a welterweight world title, the majority draw made it clear that “Pac-Man” still has much to offer. Despite the result, Pacquiao defied expectations by showing himself competitive against an opponent 16 years younger. His speed and explosiveness, characteristics that made him an eight-division champion and a legend of the sport, are still present.

Don’t worry, PacMan is back and the journey will continue.

The key question is: Who should be Pacquiao’s next opponent? Both Barrios and Pacquiao suggested a rematch, but is that really what the fans want? Pacquiao’s return was exciting, but the fight was not spectacular enough to warrant an immediate rematch. The numbers reflect a fight with little effectiveness, with Pacquiao connecting 101 of 577 punches (17.5%) and Barrios 120 of 658 (18.2%). For this version of Pacquiao, it was a great performance after four years of inactivity. However, the Pacquiao of a decade ago would probably have had less trouble beating Barrios. Pacquiao’s team is looking for a more renowned opponent. Names like Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Rolando “Rolly” Romero have been mentioned. A fight with Davis seems unlikely due to the weight difference, but a fight with Romero is more viable. Romero, WBA “regular” welterweight champion, is coming off a victory over Ryan Garcia. This option is less risky than facing Brian Norman Jr. or Devin Haney, who are younger and stronger. Pacquiao is interested in fighting at the end of the year, so a fight with Romero fits perfectly. Romero has power, but lacks defense and footwork. The fight would be intense, with Romero looking for the knockout and Pacquiao using his combinations. Another option would be a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.

If Mayweather comes out of retirement and signs the contract, we will fight.

Although fans might not be interested in that rematch, it’s a viable option in the current boxing world. Meanwhile, the most realistic option for Pacquiao remains Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
