Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Erickson Lubin: Clash of Titans in November

The expected return of Vergil Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs) to the ring is confirmed for November 8th. He will face Erickson Lubin in an exciting defense of his WBC interim super welterweight title at the Dickies Center in Fort Worth, TX, as announced by Golden Boy Promotions on Thursday. The fight, which promises to be a high-caliber spectacle, will be broadcast live worldwide via DAZN. This fight represents a homecoming for Ortiz, who is coming off an impressive decision victory over Israil Madrimov in February.

I’m always happy to be part of the fights that the fans want to see.

Although this matchup wasn’t the one Ortiz originally sought.

Ortiz, 27, was targeting a fight with WBO champion Xander Zayas, and the two exchanged provocations on social media. An offer was made to Zayas’ promoter, Top Rank, with a deadline to accept last Friday. However, the parties failed to reach an agreement, which led Ortiz’s management to quickly secure a fight with Lubin. Rumors also emerged about a possible fight between Ortiz and Jaron “Boots” Ennis in 2026. Ortiz’s representation denied that any agreement existed for that fight.

Golden Boy literally tried with every major opponent that was there for us and nobody wanted to fight Vergil. Even His Excellency (Turki Alalshikh) tried by offering ‘Boots’ a life-changing amount of money and he said no to a tune-up fight. Vergil Ortiz is the most feared man in boxing. Credit to Lubin for doing what nobody else would do.

Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs), currently ranked as the IBF’s number 1 contender in the super welterweight division, will seek to pull off an upset and obtain the most important victory of his career as he continues his quest to become a world champion. Lubin has won three consecutive fights after losing to current WBC champion Sebastian Fundora in April 2022. Lubin, 29, has victories over Jeison Rosario and Jesus Ramos, and his only other loss was against Jermell Charlo in a WBC super welterweight title fight in 2017, which resulted in a devastating first-round knockout.

This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. This fight is about redemption; I’m back for everything.
