Olympic Boxing Champion, Lazizbek Mullojonov, Provisionally Suspended for Doping

The Olympic boxing champion in the heavyweight category, Lazizbek Mullojonov, has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA). The 26-year-old Uzbek boxer was subjected to an out-of-competition doping control on June 11, where methasterone was detected, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid. This substance is associated with the rapid increase of muscle mass, strength, and power.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and has the right to request the analysis of the B sample,” ITA said in a statement on Tuesday.

If the analysis of sample B is requested and this confirms the result of sample A, it will be considered a confirmed violation of anti-doping rules, according to the ITA. If the analysis of sample B is not requested, the case will also proceed as a confirmed violation of anti-doping rules. The agency also added that “the athlete will have the opportunity to present their explanations about the result”. Mullojonov also won the bronze medal in the heavyweight event at the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships and a gold medal in super heavyweight at the 2022 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships.
