Jaime Munguia: Victory at Risk After Positive Doping Test
The recent victory of former junior middleweight world champion, Jaime Munguia, over Bruno Surace on May 4th, could be jeopardized after yielding a positive result in a post-fight doping test.
A representative from Munguia’s team communicated that they received notification from VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) on Wednesday night. The result detected metabolites of exogenous testosterone in sample A. The team will formally respond to the notification and request the opening of sample B. Munguia, with a record of 45 wins and 2 losses, with 35 knockouts, has a 10-day period to request the analysis of sample B. If this also reveals the presence of the prohibited substance, the former champion’s decision victory could be annulled and converted to “no decision.” Furthermore, he would face a suspension that could range from six months to a year.So far, Golden Boy Promotions, Munguia’s promoter, has not issued any statement regarding the matter.
In the fight, Munguia achieved victory by decision after having suffered a knockout defeat in the sixth round against Surace in December. The match was part of the Riyadh Season card, headlined by the fight between Canelo Álvarez and William Scull.
