Boxing Legend Mike McCallum Passes Away

The boxing world mourns the loss of Mike McCallum, a Jamaican legend who left an indelible mark on the sport. Known as “The Bodysnatcher”, McCallum passed away on Saturday in Las Vegas at the age of 68, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

McCallum, recognized for his power and skill, had a distinguished career between 1981 and 1997. He retired with an impressive record of 49 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw. After hanging up his gloves, he became a successful trainer in Las Vegas.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on December 7, 1956, McCallum represented his country at the 1976 Summer Olympics. His professional debut in 1981 was overwhelming, with 32 consecutive victories, 29 of them by knockout. In 1984, he became the first Jamaican-born world boxing champion.

McCallum conquered world titles in three different categories: super welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight. His legacy was recognized with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.

“With deep sadness, I learned of the death of Jamaica’s three-time world boxing champion, Michael McKenzie McCallum. I extend my deepest condolences to his mother, siblings, and children. On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, I take this opportunity to extend our condolences to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican figure.”

McCallum was feared for his devastating body shots, but he was also recognized for his technique and endurance; he was never knocked out in his 55 fights. He achieved victories over figures like Julian Jackson, Donald Curry, and Milton McCrory.

After winning the WBA super welterweight title in 1984, he successfully defended the title six times, all by knockout. He suffered his first defeat against Sumbu Kalambay in 1988, but then conquered the vacant middleweight title by defeating Herol Graham. Subsequently, he avenged his defeat against Kalambay and had a bout with James Toney.

At 37, McCallum won a world title in a third weight class by defeating Jeff Harding in 1994. After his retirement, McCallum remained active in Las Vegas, training boxers alongside Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
