Teofimo López Jr. vs. Shakur Stevenson: Fight Analysis and Predictions
The WBO super lightweight champion, Teofimo López Jr., will put his title on the line this Saturday against Shakur Stevenson at Madison Square Garden in New York. López, a former unified lightweight champion, will seek to defend for the fourth time the belt he won after defeating Josh Taylor in June 2023.
Since then, Lopez has achieved decision victories over Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett in 2024, and over Arnold Barboza Jr. last May. Although he hasn’t secured a knockout since August 2022, Lopez has demonstrated a dominant performance, especially against Taylor and Barboza.
López’s combination of power, footwork, and athleticism could be key, especially if he manages to close the distance and connect combinations against a difficult opponent.
Stevenson, current WBC lightweight champion, moves up to 140 pounds in search of becoming a world champion in four divisions. Known for his defensive technique, Stevenson has sometimes been criticized for his conservative style, but his ring control and evasion ability have made him almost untouchable. He demonstrated an aggressive offense in his victory over William Zepeda last July.
The match presents a classic stylistic contrast: Will López be able to overcome Stevenson’s defense and impose his offense? Or will Stevenson control the distance with his jab and footwork, neutralizing López’s power?
We analyze the keys of the fight with boxing experts.Shakur Stevenson put on an offensive boxing display against William Zepeda last July in Queens, New York.Shawn Porter, Former Welterweight ChampionLópez possesses intangible attributes: athleticism, explosiveness, and power. Stevenson has the ability to find the timing and dictate the distance and rhythm of the fight. López must decide what to do and when, against a boxer difficult to hit. This is Stevenson’s fight to lose and López’s to win.
How does López win?
Patience will be key. He should not rush to throw strong punches. If he fights out of rhythm, using a simple jab and feints to find moments to throw combinations, his patience can dictate the pace and opportunities will come.
How does Stevenson win?
Stevenson just needs to be himself. He must force Lopez to attack him and fight in his guard. If he doesn’t fight as usual, he could lose. He must be a great counter-puncher.

Fight Analysis
I’m glad this fight is taking place. I liked the way Shakur fought against Zepeda, showing an aggressive offense. Teofimo is a great fighter when he’s at his best, with great skill and confidence. Shakur is an intelligent boxer. I think after three or four rounds, Teofimo needs to take control. I think he’s stronger and has more power. But, will he be able to do it against Shakur? I don’t know.
How does Stevenson win?
Shakur must box using his jab, straight punches and keep moving. He must throw punches in combinations and use combinations. The key for him is to stay focused and maintain composure.
How does López win?
He will have to attack. He must attack from all angles with combinations as he advances.
Fight Prediction
I think Shakur should win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Teofimo wins. I’m going with Teofimo for the upset.Teofimo López, on the right, defended his WBO super lightweight world title with a unanimous decision over Arnold Barboza Jr. in Times Square in New York last May.Al Bernstein, boxing commentator and member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame
The Confrontation
It’s intriguing because Stevenson is a good boxer and puncher, and Lopez is also a good boxer-puncher. The biggest question is, which Lopez will show up? Consistency favors Stevenson. Will we see Stevenson be more aggressive? And Lopez, perhaps, adopt a more measured approach? Those are some questions we can ask ourselves.
How does López win?
It is important that Lopez gives his best effort. He must be aggressive and increase his punch volume. If he is active, focuses on the body and head, and cuts off the ring, he has a chance of winning.
How does Stevenson win?
You must use your boxing skills and be offensive enough to secure the rounds.
Fight Prediction
I give a slight edge to Stevenson, but I think it’s a very close fight.
