Katie Taylor Steps Away Temporarily from Boxing, Designated “Champion in Recess” by the WBC
The outstanding boxer Katie Taylor will take some time off from the ring to attend to personal matters, as confirmed by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Consequently, Taylor has been designated as “recess” champion. Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) secured a victory over Amanda Serrano in July, securing the undisputed super lightweight championship. Originally, Taylor was expected to face Chantelle Cameron. However, the WBC has named the Irishwoman as the interim champion, ordering Cameron to fight Sandy Ryan for the title. As a champion in recess, Taylor has the flexibility to be absent from the sport, with the possibility of returning and competing for the title in the future.
Suliman added: “The fight that should have taken place was against Chantelle Cameron; by naming her the champion in recess, we will order Sandy Ryan to fight Cameron to ratify the WBC super lightweight world title.” Cameron (21-1, 8 KOs) has expressed her desire for a third fight against Taylor, after having beaten her in Dublin in May 2023, inflicting Taylor’s only professional defeat. Taylor won the rematch later that year, setting the stage for a trilogy. However, Cameron will now be ordered to face Ryan (8-3-1), who returned with a victory against Jade Grierson earlier this month after consecutive defeats to Mikaela Mayer.“She [Taylor] let us know that she plans to take some time away from the ring to attend to personal matters,” stated Mauricio Suliman, WBC president.
