“Boots” Ennis Shows His Power at Junior Middleweight

Jaron “Boots” Ennis demonstrated his power in his debut at 154 pounds, knocking out Uisma Lima in the first round. The fight, held at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Ennis’ hometown, ended in just two minutes. Ennis, now with an undefeated record of 35-0 and 31 knockouts, made his superiority clear from the start against an opponent who could not respond to the talent of the former welterweight champion, current interim WBA champion in the junior middleweight division.

I did what I had to do. I’m here at 154 pounds and I made a statement, so bring me those names.

The fight began with an exchange of blows, but Ennis took the initiative. A left hook to Lima’s face, followed by a combination, sent his opponent to the canvas for the first time. Although Lima (14-2, 10 KOs) got up, he was visibly affected. Ennis continued his attack, connecting punches to Lima’s body and head, forcing a second knockdown. Despite Lima getting back on his feet, the situation was unsustainable and the referee stopped the fight at 1:58 of the first round.

I sent a great message. They know what time it is and they know who I want.

This victory sets the stage for an expected showdown between Ennis and WBC interim champion Vergil Ortiz, who will face Erickson Lubin. The possibility of a fight between Ennis and Ortiz was in the air this year, but it did not materialize. Ennis was criticized for facing Lima, who had no experience against quality opponents. Now, Ennis is confident that a fight against Ortiz will materialize.

It’s going to happen next. I know [Ortiz] is focused on his fight. I want Vergil Ortiz next, but if he doesn’t want it, I’d fight [Jermell] Charlo, [Sebastian] Fundora, or Xander [Zayas]. Anyone can get it. This division is mine.
