The former world heavyweight champion, Daniel Dubois, has announced his separation from his coach, Don Charles. Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) suffered a knockout defeat in the fifth round against Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium last month. This victory consolidated Usyk as undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time, by adding Dubois’ IBF belt to his collection, which meant the third defeat in the career of the British boxer. Now, Dubois has decided to leave Charles, with whom he began working before his first fight against Usyk in August 2023.
The British boxer also expressed his desire for a change, seeking a new approach for the next phase of his career, with the aim of becoming a two-time heavyweight world champion. Dubois announced that he will soon reveal details about the structure of his new team. According to reports, it is speculated that Dubois could work with Tony Sims, Joshua’s former coach, who also trains other boxers like Conor Benn in Essex. Charles was key in Dubois’ rise in the heavyweight rankings and in the revitalization of his career. Following a notable effort in their first fight together against Usyk in Poland, Dubois secured significant victories over Filip Hrgovic and Jarrell Miller, followed by a decisive knockout win. This change adds to a series of modifications for Dubois, as co-trainer Kieran Farrell also left the team earlier this month. In addition, the British boxer has started working with boxing manager Sam Jones. Before collaborating with Charles, Dubois worked with Shane McGuigan, who trains his sister and lightweight world champion, Caroline Dubois.I want to take this moment to thank Don Charles and his team for all the time, effort, and hard work they have dedicated to me over the last 18 months. I am very grateful for everything.
