Navarrete vs. Suárez Technical Decision Revoked: There Will Be a Rematch!
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has overturned Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete’s controversial technical decision victory over Charly Suárez in defense of his WBO super lightweight title. The fight, which initially favored Navarrete, has been declared a “no decision” following a unanimous vote last Monday. The fight took place on May 10 at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Navarrete was declared the winner when the fight was stopped in the eighth round, due to a cut above the champion’s left eyebrow, according to the ringside doctor. Referee Edward Collantes initially ruled that the cut was caused by an accidental clash of heads. The scorecards favored Navarrete with scores of 77-76, 78-75 and 77-76.
However, shortly after the event, new images revealed that the cut was the result of a blow, invalidating the original decision. Had the cut been ruled as caused by a blow before the scorecard reading, Suárez would have been declared the winner by technical knockout, as Navarrete was unable to continue.
The CSAC made the decision after reviewing the new images. The OMB issued a statement ordering a rematch shortly thereafter.Carl Moretti, Top Rank’s vice president of boxing operations, announced that his company will comply with the WBO’s request for a rematch. Navarrete (39-2-1, 30 KOs), from Mexico, was the favorite for the fight against Suárez (18-0, 10 KOs) from the Philippines. Suárez was showing a great performance at the time of the stoppage, and the initial decision allowed Navarrete to retain his world title.“In light of the foregoing, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) orders a rematch,” reads the statement.

Now, both boxers are expected to have the opportunity to settle their differences in the ring at a later date. Navarrete is currently under medical suspension by the California commission until July 9.
