Collazo Retains World Titles After Controversial Detention
Puerto Rican boxer Oscar Collazo successfully defended his WBO and WBA strawweight titles on Saturday, defeating Jayson Vayson by stoppage in the seventh round. The decision by Vayson’s team to stop the fight generated surprise. The fight remained competitive until the moment of the stoppage. Vayson, despite having been knocked down in the first round, remained aggressive against Collazo. Vayson managed to recover, focusing on Collazo’s body in the fourth round. Collazo responded with combinations, cornering Vayson in the sixth and seventh rounds.Collazo, with this victory, adds his third consecutive win by stoppage and consolidates his reign as champion since 2023. He won the WBO title by defeating Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023 and added the WBA title in 2024, by knocking out Knockout CP Freshmart in November of that same year. They thought I was dazed, but I wanted to fight. Of course, I respect the corner’s decision for the boxer’s safety… I felt the blows on my body, but I thought I could handle it.

In the co-main event, Gabriela Fundora, undisputed women’s flyweight champion, dominated Alexas Kubicki, achieving a victory by stoppage in the seventh round. Kubicki entered as a replacement for the Argentinian Ayelen “Piru” Granadino, who had been denied a visa to enter the United States. Fundora didn’t take long to impose his rhythm, connecting combinations against Kubicki, who tried to defend himself from Fundora’s greater reach, until the fight was stopped.I think the stoppage was good. I was pressing, picking my shots. [The seventh round] was the round we were going to throw and throw, and we got the stoppage… the last three rounds I was wearing him down. I knew I was going to get it. I applied the pressure as I wanted. I saw he was getting tired, and I wanted to pick my shots in that round and it was stopped.
