Oscar Collazo Retains World Titles After Controversial Stoppage

In a night full of action, Puerto Rican boxer Oscar Collazo successfully defended his WBO and WBA light flyweight titles by stopping Jayson Vayson in the seventh round. The fight, which took place on Saturday, ended unexpectedly when Vayson’s corner decided to stop the fight, generating surprise among those present. The fight, which unfolded competitively, showed an aggressive Vayson seeking to impose his rhythm against a Collazo who had managed to send him to the canvas in the first round. Vayson reacted and began to attack Collazo’s body in the fourth round. Collazo responded with effective combinations, cornering Vayson against the ropes in the sixth and seventh rounds. Despite the intensity of the exchange, Vayson’s corner made the decision to stop the fight, even though the Filipino pugilist did not seem to be in any obvious danger.

They thought I was dazed, but I wanted to keep fighting. Of course, I respect the corner’s decision for the boxer’s safety. I felt the blows on my body, but I thought I could handle it.

Collazo, who represents Puerto Rico, added his third consecutive victory by way of knockout. The champion has maintained his reign since 2023, when he conquered the WBO title by defeating Melvin Jerusalem in May of that year. In 2024, he added the WBA title to his collection, after knocking out Knockout CP Freshmart in November.

I think the stoppage was good. I was pressing, I was choosing my shots. The seventh round was the moment we were going to throw punches and we stopped it. In the last three rounds I was wearing him down. I knew I was going to get it. I applied the pressure as I wanted. I saw that he was getting tired and I wanted to choose my shots in that round and it was stopped.

Gabriela Fundora Dominates in the Co-Main Event

In the co-main event, the undisputed women’s flyweight champion, Gabriela Fundora, demonstrated her superiority by defeating Alexas Kubicki by technical knockout in the seventh round. Kubicki, who replaced the Argentinian Ayelen “Piru” Granadino, who was denied a visa to enter the United States, could not withstand Fundora’s attack. Fundora quickly connected effective combinations on Kubicki, who tried to defend himself from his opponent, but the fight was eventually stopped.
