Julio César Chávez Jr. Released from Prison in Mexico
Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was released on Sunday from a prison in northern Mexico. His detention occurred in August, after being deported from the United States. The son of Mexican boxing legend Julio César Chávez faces accusations related to involvement with cartels and illegal arms trafficking in Mexico. Chávez’s release came after a judge’s decision in Hermosillo, a city located in northern Mexico. The judge determined that it was not necessary for him to remain in custody while awaiting trial. However, he was prohibited from leaving the country, according to a federal agent who informed the AP news agency, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. The judge also established a three-month period for further investigation of the case.Chávez was arrested in the United States in July, after a media encounter against American Jake Paul in Los Angeles. Mexican authorities had an arrest warrant against him since 2023. The president of Mexico explained that the authorities had not arrested him before because he was mainly in the United States. The case against Chávez is part of a broader investigation that the Mexican prosecutor’s office initiated in 2019 against the Sinaloa Cartel, for crimes of organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking and drug trafficking, following a complaint filed by the United States.Chávez’s lawyer, Rubén Fernando Benítez Álvarez, has described the accusations against his client as “speculations” and “urban legends”.
