Julio César Chávez Jr. Deported to Mexico for Alleged Ties to the Cartel

Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was deported to Mexico after being arrested in the United States for overstaying his visa and lying on his green card application. He now faces accusations related to alleged links to organized crime in his home country. U.S. authorities handed Chávez Jr. over to Mexico, where he is wanted by the justice system. According to official sources, the boxer was admitted to a prison on the outskirts of Hermosillo, Sonora.

I understand he was deported. I don’t know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico.

Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed the news during her daily press conference. Chávez Jr., 39 years old, had an arrest warrant in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking, as well as alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. The investigation against him began in 2019, according to Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero. The arrest of Chávez Jr. in the United States occurred on July 3, a few days after his fight with Jake Paul in California. Following the arrest, Sheinbaum expressed her hope that the boxer would be deported to face the charges against him. Julio César Chávez Jr., son of the legendary boxer Julio César Chávez, has had a career marked by ups and downs. His father, an iconic figure in boxing, has defended his son publicly, although he has not made any statements since the deportation. Throughout his career, Chávez Jr. has struggled with addiction issues, leading him to fail drug tests, serve suspensions, and have weight problems. Chávez Jr. conquered the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defended it on three occasions. He shared the ring with figures like Canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martínez, losing to both. In 2012, he was convicted of driving under the influence in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail. In January 2024, he was arrested on weapons-related charges. Police found two AR-style rifles. He was released on $50,000 bail, with the condition of entering an addiction treatment center, a case that is still pending.
