Boxing in Times Square: A Historic Event Under the City Lights

Last Friday, Times Square was transformed into an unusual setting for a sporting event: an open-air boxing evening. The iconic location, known for its crowds and bright advertisements, was the backdrop for “Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves”, an event that marked a milestone in boxing history.

The anticipation was palpable among the passersby, who encountered a boxing ring in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Curiosity and surprise were constant, as those present wondered what was happening in the heart of New York.

A Unique Setting for a Special Night

The main event featured the expected return of Ryan Garcia, who faced Rolando “Rolly” Romero. In addition, the card included exciting fights between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez, and Teofimo Lopez against Arnold Barboza Jr.

The ring was strategically located in front of ABC’s “Good Morning America” television studio, with the iconic Carlo’s Bake Shop as a backdrop. The structure, composed of four pillars, a roof, and video screens, created an unparalleled atmosphere.

I’ve been in fights with 50,000 people and I’d say this is the most iconic and historic fight I’ve witnessed in my entire life. Right here, in the middle of Times Square.

The tickets were not for sale to the general public, which created an atmosphere of exclusivity. Giant screens broadcast the fights to fans who could not access the ring, while the tall fences covered with red tarpaulins limited the view, intensifying the feeling of a private event.

In my 45 years in boxing, there is no comparison. I think this surpasses everything in the sport of boxing or in any sport, literally. I don’t think we’ve had live basketball in Times Square. … I think this is very unique, it’s incredible, it’s amazing.

Even from nearby platforms and buildings, fans found ways to enjoy the event, demonstrating their passion for boxing. A group of construction workers enjoyed a privileged view from the top of a construction site, sharing the excitement of the night.

The evening was attended by celebrities, athletes, and iconic figures from the world of boxing. Among those in attendance were actor Michael J. Fox, New York Knicks player Karl-Anthony Towns, and champions Shakur Stevenson and Terence Crawford.

The arrival of the boxers to the ring was another spectacle. The fighters were transported in classic vehicles, including yellow cabs, creating a memorable experience for the gathered fans.

Key Moments of the Night

Devin Haney’s ring entrance, with a black leather jacket and pants, was a highlight. Rolly Romero, for his part, paid tribute to “Back to the Future” with a themed outfit and a display car.

Ryan Garcia, wearing a blue outfit and a special vehicle, was looking for a triumphant return. However, Romero surprised everyone with a left hook that sent him to the canvas in the second round.

Romero won by unanimous decision, frustrating Garcia’s expected return and the possible rematch with Haney. Despite the result, Romero expressed his desire for a new fight between Garcia and Haney to take place.
