Promotions and Consolidations in Boxing
Abdullah Mason, at just 21 years old, won by unanimous decision against Sam Noakes, becoming the youngest current boxing world champion by obtaining the WBO lightweight title. Mason, despite his advantage in skills, faced his first 12-round fight and demonstrated great endurance and strategy to overcome an opponent who did not give in. Mason’s victory places him in eighth place in his division’s ranking. Devin Haney, for his part, climbed to the top of the welterweight rankings after defeating Brian Norman Jr., conquering the WBO title with a masterful boxing exhibition. Haney sent Norman to the canvas in the second round and dominated the fight with a constant jab, nullifying his opponent. Norman dropped three places in the ranking, placing at number 4. Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez reaffirmed his number 1 position by defeating Fernando Martinez, unifying three super flyweight titles and consolidating his dominance in the category. Martinez remains in second place, considering his two victories over Kazuto Ioka, ranked number 3. In the light heavyweight division, David Benavidez’s resounding victory over Anthony Yarde solidified his position at number 3, behind Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Benavidez announced his transition to the cruiserweight division for his next fight, where he will challenge champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
