Boxer Isis Sio Wakes Up from Coma After Fight in California

Junior flyweight boxer Isis Sio has emerged from a medically induced coma after being knocked out on Saturday by Jocelyn Camarillo in San Bernardino, California. According to a statement issued by her family and team, Sio is no longer connected to a ventilator. However, she remains in the intensive care unit at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

“Isis is a passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who carefully evaluates every opportunity presented to her,” the statement says. “Her decision to compete on Saturday, March 21st against Jocelyn Camarillo was not taken lightly, but was reviewed and carefully analyzed before accepting it.”

Statement from Isis Sio’s family and team
Sio, 19 years old, arrived at the fight against the undefeated Camarillo with a record of 1-2, and was coming off a technical knockout loss in January. Camarillo, who had never achieved a knockout in his professional career, connected a series of blows to the head in the first round that left Sio unconscious a little over a minute into the fight. Sio was taken out of the arena on a stretcher and was seen convulsing. The statement also adds: “At this time, Isis remains in the ICU, but is no longer connected to the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progress. We are awaiting further updates from her medical team. She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions that are closely monitoring her condition.” “We sincerely appreciate the continued support, thoughts, and prayers during this time.”
