David Benavidez Shows His Dominance and Aims for Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez
David Benavidez reaffirmed his position in boxing by defeating Anthony Yarde this Saturday, retaining his WBC and WBA “regular” super-middleweight titles. Following his victory, Benavidez announced his plans to face Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, WBO and WBA cruiserweight champion, in May. Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) managed to knock down Yarde (27-4, 24 KOs) at the beginning of the seventh round, ending the fight with a series of punches that forced the referee to stop the fight at minute 1:59. The fight took place at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight was dominated by Benavidez, who imposed his style with effective combinations to the body and head.
This was Benavidez’s third appearance in the light heavyweight category, marking his first stoppage victory at this weight. His two previous fights at 175 pounds resulted in decision victories against David Morell and Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Benavidez needed approximately four rounds to deploy his strategy, but once he did, the fight tilted in his favor. The situation worsened for Yarde in the sixth round, when Benavidez began to hit his chest in the center of the ring after Yarde connected a good uppercut. The blow seemed to motivate Benavidez, who dominated the rest of the round and the fight. Facing Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) would mean a fight against another Mexican champion for Benavidez. Ramirez’s last defeat was by decision against Dmitry Bivol in a non-title fight in November 2022.“He entered the world of the ‘Monster’ and was knocked out,” commented Benavidez, known as “The Mexican Monster.” “This is incredible. I am very happy with this. I have news. On May 2nd, ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, I am going to go up to challenge for his title.”
