Ben Whittaker is enthusiastic about the future of boxing. Although it may seem strange to categorize his next fight against Benjamin Gavazi (19-1, 13 KOs) in Birmingham as the beginning of a new stage, the reality is that the atmosphere suggests it. The anticipation is evident in his eyes as he speaks with a small group of journalists before his return to the ring, discussing Matchroom, his move to Ireland, and the emotions experienced in the last twelve months. Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) is a skilled, intelligent, and often controversial boxer. His provocative style in the ring generates divided opinions, but also attracts the attention of the public. Whittaker has accepted that he cannot please everyone, especially in the world of boxing, so he prefers to be true to himself. Olympic silver medalist and with an innate talent for showmanship, it’s no surprise that Eddie Hearn tried to sign Whittaker after the Tokyo Games. Finally, after the separation of Boxxer and Sky Sports, Hearn achieved his goal and Whittaker signed with Matchroom. Now that the promotions are over, it’s time to win fights.

Activity.

Whittaker highlights the importance of activity when asked about the advantages of his new promoter: “I can have 3 or 4 fights next year, whereas with my previous promoter I could only have four fights. I don’t need to be the main star, I can be anywhere as long as I can fight frequently.” Hearn has already hinted at the possibility of bringing Whittaker to the United States early next year. His confidence and flashy style could be a better fit for the American public. Although Whittaker claims he loves fighting at home and that UK fans are “the best in the world”, his aspirations go beyond these two countries. Whittaker has a global vision.

I get a lot of criticism here in the UK, but I love it. I have a good fanbase in the United States… Interestingly, one of my biggest followers is in Japan and Brazil. Eddie can take me to those strange places you could never go to.

It’s not surprising that Whittaker wants to move on after a turbulent year.

He was heavily criticized after his fight against Liam Cameron in October 2024, when he suffered an injury after falling through the ropes and couldn’t continue. He won the rematch with a knockout in the second round in April, but hasn’t fought again since then. It was an emotional moment. Whittaker was criticized for his celebration, but his coach Andy Lee came to his defense.

No one can underestimate what this man has gone through since the first fight. Mentally, the avalanche of insults, the fact that he’s still here, not many could endure what he’s been through. This is a champion. I’m not going to waste time with someone who is not worthy of my time. This guy is the best person you’ll spend time with.

Lee
This was a brilliant endorsement for an often misunderstood boxer, from one of the most respected trainers in the sport. The next fight will be the second they have together, and both hope that their relationship will lead them to titles. Whittaker, although not old at 28 years old, knows he must act soon if he wants to aspire to the light heavyweight titles, a division with opportunities both nationally and internationally.

Whether or not it’s a second stage, Whittaker is a boxer worth watching, whether you like it or not.
