Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez Looks to Dominate the Super Flyweight Division Before Moving Up

The American boxer Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez has set an ambitious goal: to unify the super flyweight division before moving up in weight. With two fights in mind, the pugilist from San Antonio, Texas, seeks to make his mark in the division. Rodríguez will face Fernando Daniel Martínez for three world titles at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This fight is part of a stellar card that includes high-caliber matchups such as David Benavidez against Anthony Yarde in the light heavyweight division and Brian Norman Jr. against Devin Haney in the welterweight division. The WBC and WBO champion, Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs), 25, is coming off a technical knockout victory over Phumelela Cafu in the tenth round in July, achieving a second title. He is currently ranked number 5 on the pound-for-pound list. His rival, Martinez (18-0, 9 KOs), 34 years old and originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has defended his WBA title four times. If Rodriguez defeats Martinez, he will only need one belt to achieve his goal of being the undisputed champion at 115 pounds. IBF champion Willibaldo Garcia (23-6-2, 13 KOs), from Mexico, will defend his title against Kenshiro Teraji in Saudi Arabia on December 25.

The goal is to be the undisputed. If I pass Martínez, there’s only one belt left, so I’m very close to achieving it.

The boxer anticipates a maximum of two more fights in the super flyweight category before moving up in weight.

I feel that the fight for the undisputed championship [against the IBF champion] can be made, I have Matchroom and my whole team behind me, they will make that fight happen, I have full confidence that it will happen.

Rodríguez acknowledges Martínez’s quality, highlighting his tenacity and consistency in the ring, but feels prepared for the challenge. Furthermore, he considers that the opportunity to share the card with other great boxers is something exciting and beneficial for the sport. This will be Rodríguez’s third defense of the title in the super flyweight category, after having unified the world titles in flyweight. The boxer has also considered the possibility of competing in featherweight (126 pounds), and mentions Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani as possible rivals in the future.

We’ve talked about 126 pounds, that would be the maximum, I’m not sure I can go any further, only time will tell, but I think I’ll end my career at 126.
