Carlos Adames Withdraws from Starting Defense Due to Illness

WBC middleweight world champion Carlos Adames has withdrawn from his scheduled title defense on Saturday against Austin “Ammo” Williams due to illness.

According to reports, Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs) was unable to get on the scale and register his weight on Friday morning due to illness, resulting in his withdrawal from the fight.

The fight was part of the “The Ring 6” card at Madison Square Garden, headlined by WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo López, defending his title against three-division champion Shakur Stevenson.

Adames, 31 years old, hasn’t fought since last February, when he faced Hamzah Sheeraz in a controversial split draw.

Williams’ manager, Sam Katkovski, confirmed that his boxer will remain on the card and will face last-minute replacement Wendy Toussaint (17-3, 7 KOs).

According to BoxRec, Toussaint was scheduled to fight on February 28 against an opponent yet to be determined. His last fight was in June, where he defeated Joseph Hicks by split decision.

Williams (19-1, 13 KOs) last fought in July, when he achieved a technical knockout in the ninth round over Ivan Vázquez in Frisco, Texas.
