Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn Crowned Champions at the American Family Insurance Championship
Madison, Wis. – European Ryder Cup captains and teammates Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn claimed victory at the American Family Insurance Championship on Sunday. The duo carded an impressive round of 64 strokes, seven under par, in the best-ball format, securing a four-stroke victory over four other teams.The tournament, which this year adopted a team format, offered PGA Tour Champions players their only event of this kind.
Clarke and Bjorn finished the championship with a cumulative score of 32 under par and 181 strokes at TPC Wisconsin. Their performance included an outstanding 59 in the first round, followed by a 58 in Saturday’s scramble round.
For Clarke, 56, originally from Northern Ireland, this represents his fifth victory on the over-59 circuit. Bjorn, 54, from Denmark, celebrates his first title in the Champions.
Steve Stricker and Mario Tiziani, who shared second place with a 65, tied the teams of Alex Cejka-Soren Kjeldsen (59), Doug Barron-Dicky Pride (69), and Steve Flesch-Paul Goydos (64) with a total of 28 under par.
Bernhard Langer and Steven Alker were one stroke away, after a round of 63. Ernie Els, winner of the tournament last year in individual mode, and Tim Herron, with a 66, finished with 26 under par.
