Coco Gauff Conquers Roland Garros and Establishes Herself in the Elite of Tennis

In an interview following her most significant victory to date, Coco Gauff revealed her ambitions in the world of tennis. “I want to be the best,” she stated without hesitation, recalling her father’s support since the age of eight. Although complete confidence does not yet dominate her, Gauff understands the importance of expressing her goals.

At just 15 years old, Gauff had already defeated her idol, Venus Williams, at Wimbledon. After a promising junior title at the French Open and her first victory in the WTA, the young tennis player received an invitation to the Wimbledon qualifying phase. The tennis world already knew her, but after defeating Williams, “Cocomaniac” was unleashed.

The transition from promising player to superstar wasn’t easy. Although she progressed, including a final at the French Open 2022, she had to wait four years to win her first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2023. Despite her talent, demonstrated by her victory at the WTA Finals 2024, she still needed to reach her ultimate goal.

However, in Paris, Gauff approached the top. The world number two swept through the tournament, losing only one set before the final. There, on Saturday, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka, world number one, with a comeback 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 38 minutes. Emotion overwhelmed her, and tears welled up as she received the trophy.

Gauff’s future, at 21, is uncertain, but her triumph at Roland Garros solidifies her as one of the best at the moment. Chris Evert, a tennis legend, highlighted her potential and what was glimpsed since she defeated Venus at Wimbledon. “She has many important titles left,” commented Evert.

Gauff is the first American to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015. Gauff’s name is already coded with tennis legends. At Roland Garros, she added her 27th victory, tying Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario as the fourth with the most victories before turning 22. Her triumph in the semifinals placed her as the second American with the most victories in that category, only behind Evert. In addition, she is the first American to win the title at Roland Garros since Serena and the fifth compatriot to win multiple Grand Slam titles at 21 years old or younger. Michelle Obama and Billie Jean King were some of the personalities who congratulated her on social media. Spike Lee, present on the court, was the first person to hug Gauff in the celebration.

In the final, Gauff remained focused. She remembered the defeat in the 2022 final and, after losing the first set, showed no frustration. She controlled the match, dominating with her serve and aggressiveness, but above all, with her composure.

“She is much more mature than a 21-year-old,” commented Caroline Wozniacki. Sabalenka, for her part, praised Gauff as a “fighter and worker.” Gauff, after the match, revealed that she was inspired by Iga Swiatek’s ceremony and that she was moved to hear the Polish anthem.

Gauff’s emotional maturity was evident during the clay season, where she defeated several Grand Slam champions. In the semifinals, she overcame Lois Boisson, the French revelation, allowing her only three games.

“It was very solid and I couldn’t play my game today because she was too good,” Boisson said.

Although she remains in the number 2 position, Gauff will have opportunities to reduce the distance with Sabalenka, starting in the grass season. Her next participation will be in Berlin, but it is not yet confirmed. Afterwards, she will focus on the hard court series and the US Open.

Gauff is the first woman in tennis history to win her first two major titles after losing the first set in both finals.

Following her victory, Sloane Stephens asked her about her upcoming goals. “I hope for another one,” Gauff replied, “but for now, I’m enjoying this one and happy to add another title to my resume.”

Almost six years after her debut, Gauff maintains the same confidence and joy. She remains committed to her goal of being the best, but time has given her perspective. When asked how she handled the pressure of the situation, Gauff responded that she realizes how insignificant it is, compared to bigger problems. “I know that, no matter the result, the sun will keep rising.”
