Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward, experienced a bitter moment by missing a crucial penalty that defined his team’s fate in the Liga MX.
Hernández, who played 103 games with United and scored 37 goals, was in charge of taking the penalty that could have put Guadalajara ahead in the second leg of the quarter-final against Cruz Azul.
However, his shot went over the crossbar, missing the opportunity to give Chivas the lead. Cruz Azul took advantage of the situation and scored in added time, winning the match 3-2 and advancing to the semifinals.
The forward, who arrived in Guadalajara in 2024 after his time with the LA Galaxy of the MLS, could be close to ending his career at the club that saw him born, with a very disappointing end to the season.
To make matters worse, Cruz Azul secured the victory in the 97th minute, leaving Guadalajara fans desolate at the Olympic University Stadium.Hernández, who came up through Guadalajara’s youth system since 1997, made his professional debut in 2006. He stayed at the club until 2010, when he was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United.
After his time at Real Madrid, he played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Sevilla, establishing himself as one of the most recognized footballers in Europe for several years.
Hernández’s future in Guadalajara is uncertain, as his contract ends on December 31.
