Italy returns to the Davis Cup final after epic battle

Italy, the current two-time champion, has secured its place in the Davis Cup final after an exciting semi-final. Flavio Cobolli starred in a memorable match against Zizou Bergs of Belgium, with a final score of 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (15), after an intense battle that included saving seven match points. Cobolli, after wasting six opportunities to close the match, finally achieved victory for Italy. The celebration was effusive, with the tennis player taking off his shirt and sharing the joy with his teammates, before consoling Bergs, visibly affected by the defeat. The final set tiebreak, with a score of 17-15, became the sixth longest in Davis Cup history.

We fight for our country, for this victory, but in the end, I have made my dream come true. I played for my whole team, my family, and it is one of the best days of my life.

Cobolli’s victory secured Italy’s place in the final without the need to play the doubles match, establishing a definitive 2-0. Previously, Matteo Berrettini contributed to the Italian triumph by defeating Raphael Collignon with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Italy reaches the final with a streak of 13 consecutive victories and will face the winner of the semi-final between Germany and Spain. The captain of the Italian team, Filippo Volandri, expressed his amazement at the intensity of the match:

In my five years as captain, I had never seen anything like it. But this is what the Davis Cup does. It was incredible. In the end, I told Cobolli, it’s 5% tactics and 95% heart.

Berrettini’s match was more straightforward, securing the first set on his serve and sealing the victory in the second set. This edition of the Davis Cup Finals 8 marks the sixth time the championship is decided at a neutral venue.
