Boxing Card: Analysis of the Most Anticipated Fights

The boxing calendar is packed with high-caliber matchups in the coming months. Three fights stand out for their appeal: Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford, for the undisputed super middleweight championship; the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois; and the trilogy between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.

In addition, figures like Naoya Inoue and Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will also be in action. Without forgetting the return of former champions like Manny Pacquiao and Jermall Charlo. But, what is the most promising matchup? Will we see a new pound-for-pound king at the end of the year? Which boxer has the best chance of causing an upset? What mega-fight would be perfect before the end of 2025?

Alofoke Deportes presents the analysis of Andreas Hale and Nick Parkinson, who share their perspectives and predictions.

The Stellar Fight: Canelo vs. Crawford

According to experts, the most attractive fight on the current calendar is the one between Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford. On September 13, two of the best boxers of today will face each other with different strategies. Canelo, undisputed super middleweight champion, has the advantage of power and experience. Crawford, former undisputed champion at 140 and 147 pounds, moves up two weight classes, after a single fight at 154 pounds.

Álvarez, who won his first title at 168 pounds seven years ago, has won world titles in four different divisions throughout his nearly 20-year career. However, his recent decision victory over William Scull suggests a possible decline, as he hasn’t achieved a knockout since November 2021. Crawford, also a world champion in four divisions, could have greater agility and boxing skills, despite having competed in lower weight classes. The match between Canelo and Crawford could be decided by a minimal margin.

Taylor vs. Serrano 3: Is It the Fight of the Year?

For some, the Taylor vs. Serrano 3 fight could be the best of the year. Considering how close and exciting their first two encounters were, a third action-packed bout is expected. Although Taylor won by decision in the first two fights, some argue that Serrano could have won the series. Both boxers have something to prove and seem made for each other. Taylor, at 39, still shows a high level, while Serrano, champion in seven different divisions, at 36, maintains her agility. This matchup, which headlines a women’s card at Madison Square Garden, could have a significant impact on the future of women’s boxing.

Who Could Give the Surprise?

Regarding surprises, Dubois over Usyk is a possibility. Beyond the controversial low blow in their August 2023 encounter, Dubois seems to be entering his physical prime. Despite his youth, Dubois, 27, has proven his worth, and the two knockout losses, against Usyk and Joe Joyce, shouldn’t define his career. His knockout victory over Anthony Joshua last September gave him confidence. Dubois knows Usyk, and he will have the opportunity to surprise the world on July 19 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Predictions and Wishes

Crawford, with his intelligence in the ring and his boxing ability, could win on points. Álvarez, although he wasn’t at his best in his last fight, could improve before a larger audience in Las Vegas. The key could be Crawford’s ability to control the distance. Crawford could use his footwork to avoid Canelo’s dangerous attacks and land quick counterattacks. His technical brilliance could give him the victory by decision.

Regarding the desired fight, a clash between Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani, WBC bantamweight champion, would be a must-see event. Nakatani, a world champion in three weight classes, could face Inoue in December, if he defeats Ryosuke Nishida. Inoue, with 11 consecutive knockout victories, and Nakatani, could offer a no-holds-barred fight.

Ennis vs. Ortiz Jr.: Awaited Duel

Another fight that could materialize is Jaron “Boots” Ennis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr. at 154 pounds. These two boxers have avoided each other for years and are often left out of the conversation in favor of Gervonta “Tank” Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez. Between Ortiz’s power and Ennis’ athleticism, this matchup could be a reality this year. Ennis, IBF and WBA welterweight champion, has been a target for Lopez, but would be more comfortable competing at 154 pounds, where Ortiz holds the WBC interim belt. Although the super welterweight division is a bit messy, a fight between Ennis and Ortiz would be exciting.

Who Will Dominate the Pound-for-Pound Ranking?

If Crawford defeats Canelo and becomes undisputed champion in a third weight class, he would be positioned as number one. Despite Usyk’s quality, he cannot move up in weight to achieve what Crawford will attempt in September. Inoue also does not have an opponent as experienced as Canelo. Crawford, currently in third place, has everything needed to beat Canelo and become the first boxer to stop the Mexican. Inactivity has been a factor against Crawford, but that will change when he faces Canelo.

Usyk, after defending his world titles this year, could maintain the top spot. Inoue could take over once Usyk retires. Crawford would also have strong arguments to be number one if he beats Alvarez in September. Usyk’s achievements, including victories over big names and the undisputed cruiserweight champion status, solidify him as the best heavyweight of his era.

Terence Crawford
