Jonah Heim Leaves Game with Hand Injury
Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim was forced to leave Wednesday night’s game against the Yankees due to a right hand injury.
The injury occurred in the second inning, after Heim threw two erratic warm-up pitches.
According to sources, the Rangers reported that Heim suffered a nerve compression in his throwing hand.
In the top of the second inning, Heim singled, the Rangers’ first hit on a cold night at Yankee Stadium. Subsequently, he was forced out at second base after a groundout by Jake Burger.
Designated hitter Kyle Higashioka was in charge of warming up Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, while Heim seemed to take longer than usual to come out of the dugout with his equipment.
After a deGrom pitch, Heim made a throw that veered towards center field. He was attended to by manager Bruce Bochy and a trainer before signaling to deGrom to throw him the ball. Heim’s return throw sailed over deGrom’s head before the catcher exited the game.
In the current season, Heim, 29, is batting .262 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 37 games.
Tucker Barnhart, the Rangers’ third catcher, took Heim’s place in the lineup.
