Orioles Designate Kyle Gibson and Tyler O’Neill to Injured List

In a surprising move, the Baltimore Orioles have designated pitcher Kyle Gibson for assignment. The decision comes after a difficult start to the season for Gibson, who recorded a 0-3 record and a 16.78 ERA in four starts. The one-year, $5.25 million contract was signed on March 22.

In addition, the team has placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list due to a left shoulder injury.

Saturday’s 10-6 loss to Washington, in the first game with Tony Mansolino as interim manager, worsened the team’s situation. The game prior to this, the firing of manager Brandon Hyde was made official, leaving the Orioles with a record of 15-29.

Gibson, a 37-year-old veteran and All-Star in 2021, holds a 112-111 record with a 4.60 ERA in 328 starts and six relief appearances during his 13 seasons in MLB.

O’Neill, a two-time Gold Glove winner, is batting .188 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and a .605 OPS in his first season after signing a three-year, $49.5 million contract.

I’m trying to catch up with my promotion from third base coach.

Mansolino, when questioned about his appointment as Hyde’s interim successor, preferred not to speculate on the reasons of general manager Mike Elias.

Elias, for his part, only issued a statement about the situation.

As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to the season is ultimately my responsibility. Part of that responsibility is to look for difficult changes to set a different course for the future.

The Orioles have called up outfielder Dylan Carlson and right-handed pitcher Kade Strowd from Triple-A Norfolk to cover the absences.
