Russian star Alex Ovechkin has announced his intention to return to the Washington Capitals for his 21st NHL season, following a year full of personal achievements and challenges.
Ovechkin, who is on the verge of turning 40 in September, has one year remaining on his five-year, $47.5 million contract, signed in 2021. The player has stated that he will face the summer with the same dedication as always, preparing intensely for the upcoming season.
I am going to use these months of rest to enjoy life and then return to work. With my coach, Pavel Burlachenko, we will do our work to be ready for the season and give my best.

The previous season was notable for Ovechkin, who overcame an injury to score 44 goals, the third-highest figure in the league, and surpass Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals, reaching 897.
Coach Spencer Carbery highlighted Ovechkin’s dedication, both in his individual performance and his leadership within the team.
Ovechkin led the team with five goals in ten postseason games, although he only scored one goal in the second round, where the Capitals failed to advance to the Eastern Conference final.
Looking ahead to next season, Ovechkin is focused on fighting for a second championship.
I’m looking forward to next year. I’m going to try to give my best and my team will help me. I just want to come back next year and see the team capable of winning the Stanley Cup.

Regarding the future, Ovechkin has not defined his plans beyond next season.
His teammate, Tom Wilson, anticipates that Ovechkin will continue to score goals and contribute to the team.
