Rory McIlroy Forced to Use a Backup Driver at the PGA Championship

The prominent golfer Rory McIlroy found himself in the need to use a backup driver during the PGA Championship. This situation originated after his main driver, subjected to testing, was declared non-conforming upon his arrival at Quail Hollow, according to a report released on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio on Friday.

McIlroy, who was tied for last place in driving accuracy among the 74 players who made the cut on Friday, only managed to hit 10 fairways in the first two rounds. The Masters champion managed to make the cut just in time, after a bogey on the final hole, by sending the ball left beyond a stream, near the corporate tents.

For the second consecutive day, McIlroy left Quail Hollow without making statements to the media.

The USGA, responsible for verifying the conformity of clubs at the request of tournaments in the United States and Mexico, confirmed that tests were carried out at Quail Hollow at the request of the PGA of America. All tests are carried out before the first round.

That program is consistent with the same level of support we provide to the PGA Tour as part of its regular driver testing program.

The PGA of America did not immediately respond to requests for information about the number of players who submitted their drivers for testing, referring to the USGA statement.

These tests are usually random and it is common to perform them before important championships.
