Danny Care Retires: English Rugby Legend Hangs Up Boots at Season's End

Legendary rugby player Danny Care has announced his retirement from professional rugby at the end of the season. After a distinguished 19-year career with the Harlequins and representing England, Care hangs up his boots, leaving an indelible legacy.

A Career Full of Successes

Care, 38, accumulated 101 caps with the English national team, playing as a scrum-half. His time with the Harlequins was equally impressive, where he played 394 matches, becoming the player with the most appearances in the professional era of the club. He joined the team in 2006 from Leeds Tykes, and contributed to winning the Premiership title in 2012 and 2021, as well as the Challenge Cup in 2011.

With England, Care celebrated three Six Nations titles (2011, 2016 and 2017) and was a key part in his team reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup.

“After 19 years playing for this incredible club, I will retire from rugby at the end of the season. I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing a boy from Leeds to come to this club and feel at home from day one.”

Care will remain linked to Harlequins in an ambassadorial role, in addition to his media responsibilities.

Laurie Dalrymple, CEO of Harlequins, also expressed her recognition:

“It’s difficult to express in words the impact that Danny has had not only on the Harlequins Rugby Club, but on the sport of rugby in general. He leaves an incredible legacy: nearly 400 appearances with the Harlequins and over a century of international caps with England.”

England’s coach, Steve Borthwick, added:

“Danny has been the heart of every team he has played for, with his passion, skill, and energy illuminating the stadiums wherever he went.”
