Doug Martin, Former NFL Star, Dies After Incident in Oakland

The world of American football is in mourning following the death of Doug Martin, former star running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The incident occurred in Oakland, California, according to authorities. Oakland police responded to a call for a home invasion on Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they encountered Martin. During the attempted arrest, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics arrived at the scene, provided medical assistance, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died. He was 36 years old.

Martin was involved in a burglary in Oakland.

The agency Athletes First, which represented Martin during his NFL career, issued a statement mentioning that the player “struggled with mental health issues that profoundly impacted his personal and professional life.” Martin’s family was seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities. According to Athletes First, “Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence, where he was apprehended by the police. What happened during his detention is being investigated.” The investigation into the death in custody is being carried out by the Homicide Section, the Oakland Police Department’s Office of Internal Affairs, the City of Oakland Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The Buccaneers, the team where Martin played six of his seven seasons in the NFL, remembered him as a “fan favorite” who had “a lasting impact on our franchise.” He was selected as one of the 50 best players in the history of the franchise. Known for his relentless playing style, Martin amassed 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns during his NFL career. He was nicknamed “Muscle Hamster”. Boise State star Martin was selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Tampa Bay. In his rookie season, he ran for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, as well as catching 49 passes for 472 yards and another touchdown, earning him a Pro Bowl selection. At the time, he had the third-most yards from scrimmage as a rookie in NFL history. His best season was in 2015, when he ran for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, and had 33 receptions for 271 yards and another touchdown. After that, he played two more seasons in Tampa Bay, and finished his career in 2018 with the Raiders. Originally from California, Martin attended Boise State from 2007 to 2011, where he ranks among the top 10 in school rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. He was honored as a first-team All-Conference selection twice.
