Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open
Tennis player Leylah Fernandez won the title at the WTA Japan Open, after defeating young prospect Tereza Valentova in an exciting final.
Fernandez, who faced the 18-year-old qualifier, Valentova, managed to prevail with partial scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3, thus securing his fifth title in his professional career.
The final, which marked Fernandez’s eighth appearance in a final of her career, showed a strong start by the Canadian, who dominated the first set in just 29 minutes.
However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to level the match after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game, taking the match to a decisive third set.
In the final set, Fernandez, currently ranked number 27 in the world, secured a crucial break in the fourth game. Despite the strong resistance from the Czech player, Fernandez managed to maintain her advantage and secure her second title of the season, after winning the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
