Hornets Cut Spencer Dinwiddie Before Season Start

The Charlotte Hornets have decided to dispense with the services of the experienced point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, as announced by the team this Thursday.

Dinwiddie signed a one-year contract for $3.6 million with the Hornets in early July, during free agency. The decision to release him was made to meet salary requirements before the start of the regular season next week, seeking to have a maximum of 15 standard contracts on the current roster.

Dinwiddie, who only participated in two preseason games with Charlotte, averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists in 30 starts with the Dallas Mavericks last season. Overall, during the 2024-25 season, he averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes per game in 79 appearances with the Mavericks.

In his twelfth season in the NBA, Dinwiddie was a key piece as the sixth man on the Mavs team that reached the Western Conference finals in 2022, after arriving as part of the deal for Kristaps Porzingis. Subsequently, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets a year later as part of the exchange for Kyrie Irving.

Throughout his career, Dinwiddie has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13.0 points and 5.1 assists in 27.7 minutes per game in 621 games (345 as a starter).
