Naomi Osaka Withdraws from Japan Open Due to Injury

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka was forced to withdraw from the Japan Open due to a left leg injury, according to tournament organizers on Friday. Osaka’s withdrawal in the quarterfinals granted Jaqueline Cristian direct passage to the semifinals. The injury, suffered during her second-round match, prevented the Japanese tennis player from recovering in time to compete. Before the injury, Osaka had achieved victories against Wakana Sonobe and Suzan Lamens. In the match against Lamens, Osaka was leading the third set 5-0 before feeling discomfort in her left leg during a key point. Despite winning the point, she requested medical time. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, returned to the court with a bandage on her left thigh and limitations in her mobility, but managed to close out the match on her third match point. In another quarterfinal match of the Japan Open, Leylah Fernandez defeated Rebecca Šramková with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3.
