Rory McIlroy Aims to Captain the European Ryder Cup Team
The renowned golfer Rory McIlroy has expressed his desire to lead the European Ryder Cup team in the future, aiming for the mid-2030s as the ideal time to assume the captain’s role. McIlroy is currently competing in his first tournament in India, marking his return to action after his outstanding participation in the Ryder Cup, where Europe defeated the United States. The 36-year-old Northern Irishman has participated in the last eight editions of the Ryder Cup and, as world number two and current Masters champion, plans to continue competing in the tournament for several more years, including the 2027 edition in Ireland.McIlroy mentioned Paul McGinley, the winning captain of 2014, and Luke Donald, who led Europe in the last two tournaments. During the Ryder Cup, McIlroy was booed by American spectators, which created a tense atmosphere. The golfer regretted that the week would be remembered for the wrong reasons, instead of highlighting the performance of the European team. McIlroy highlighted the superiority of the European team in the early days of the competition. He pointed out that, on each occasion, the European team managed to outperform the Americans. The golfer also expressed his desire to expand his tournament schedule internationally, including participations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the Australian Open in the coming months. McIlroy, a cricket enthusiast, regretted not being able to attend a cricket match during his stay in India.Absolutely, I would love to be captain someday, and I feel very fortunate to have had a front-row seat playing under some of the best captains in history at the Ryder Cup.
