Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before in a title run. I feel very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match, played in a highly tense atmosphere, saw Gauff, currently number 3 in the world, demonstrate her composure by saving the second set when Pegula, ranked sixth, was up 5-3. Gauff kept her cool and managed to break Pegula’s serve to tie the score at 5-5. Gauff’s consistency allowed her to capitalize on Pegula’s errors, securing the first point of the match with a winning forehand. Finally, in a short exchange, Gauff sealed her victory with another powerful forehand. Despite the defeat, Pegula had achieved an outstanding performance in the semifinals, defeating Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one. Gauff became the second American to win the Wuhan title, after Venus Williams in 2015. This was the seventh match between Gauff and Pegula, with an overall record of 4-3 in favor of Pegula. Both players have shared success in doubles, winning several WTA titles.

We’ve spent a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her very much. She’s very mature for her age.
