Jon Rahm Out of the Fight for the Title at the Spanish Open

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has been knocked out of the fight for his fourth title at the Spanish Open after a performance that did not meet expectations in the third round. Rahm admitted to having made “stupid mistakes” that prevented him from advancing in the overall standings. Before the support of the public at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Rahm signed a card of 71 strokes (par of the course), accumulating -4, a mark that distanced him from the leaders of the tournament.

I’ve made stupid mistakes all week. Let’s see if tomorrow I can play 18 solid and flawless holes.

The “Lion of Barrika” started the day five strokes off the lead, but a bad start with a bogey on the 1st hole was compensated with a spectacular eagle on the 4th and three consecutive birdies from the 6th to the 8th. However, a new bogey on the 5th and his first double bogey of the tournament on the 11th stopped his aspirations. Rahm expressed his frustration, explaining that the course “was very complicated, with hard and small ‘greens'” that penalized any imprecision. The player also mentioned that the pitch is still affected by the Filomena storm (2021): “Since then the field has had to recover. It’s easy to say that it needs to improve, but after such a harsh storm it’s complicated.” Before speaking to the media, Rahm had an emotional moment as he hugged his four-year-old son, Kepa, on the 18th hole. The Spanish Open continues this Sunday with the final round, where Rahm will seek to close with a solid performance before his audience.
