Greenwell, who finished second in the voting for the American League Most Valuable Player in 1988, was diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer, according to reports.

In the sports world, Greenwell is remembered for his outstanding performance with the Red Sox. He made two All-Star appearances, won the Silver Slugger award in 1988, and was a key player for the team.
