San Jose Sharks Begin Season Without Captain

SAN JOSÉ, California – The San Jose Sharks will head into the upcoming NHL season without a designated captain. Instead, the team opted for a rotation of five players who will wear the “A” as alternate captains. Coach Ryan Warsofsky announced on Wednesday that forward Tyler Toffoli will be wearing the “A” in all games. In addition, Macklin Celebrini and Barclay Goodrow will alternate as alternate captains in home games, while Mario Ferraro and Alexander Wennberg will do so in away games.

Each of the players who will be part of our leadership group for the 2025-26 season brings an important skill and character to the locker room. These individuals embody what it means to be a Shark, and the identity we want to have as a team. As a coaching staff, we are excited to have each of these players in a leadership role and setting an example for the rest of the group.

This will be the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Sharks will not have a designated captain for the entire season. Joe Pavelski was named captain the following season, and Logan Couture succeeded him starting in the 2019-20 season. Couture was the captain until last season, despite not playing. In April, Couture announced that he would not be able to play due to a chronic injury in the groin and pelvis area.
