Alexander Zverev, currently number 3 in the world, expressed his discontent with the direction tennis is taking, suggesting that tournament organizers are modifying the courts to favor Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Zverev achieved a victory over Valentin Royer with a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday, despite suffering an injury.
The German tennis player added that he doesn’t like the game being so similar on all surfaces. He believes that tennis needs variety and different styles of play, something that, according to him, is currently lacking. Both Alcaraz and Sinner have held the number 1 ranking since June 2024. They have shared the four Grand Slams of this year and both are coming off winning titles: Sinner at the China Open and Alcaraz at the Japan Open. Alcaraz is not participating in the Shanghai Masters due to a left ankle injury. Zverev had to be treated on the court for a toe injury while serving for the match at 5-4, but managed to finish the match. Regarding his injury, Zverev commented: “I landed badly on my toe and then I could barely take a step, so we’ll see what it is. We’ll see if I’m healthy again this year, because it’s been a struggle, but I’m happy to have finished the match.”“I hate when it’s the same, to be honest,” Zverev declared during his on-court interview. “I think the tournament directors are going in that direction because, obviously, they want Jannik and Carlos to perform well in every tournament, and that’s what they prefer.”
