Flyers Send Ryan Ellis to Sharks in a Trade

The Philadelphia Flyers have finalized a move involving defenseman Ryan Ellis, sending him to the San Jose Sharks. This trade ends Ellis’s time with the Flyers, where he only participated in four games over four seasons.

In the agreement, Ellis and a conditional sixth-round selection were sent to San Jose. In return, the Flyers receive forward Carl Grundstrom and defenseman Artem Guryev.

The condition of the sixth-round selection states that San Jose will receive the first of the two sixth-round selections that Philadelphia owns in 2026, their own and Columbus’.

With this move, the Flyers now have five picks in the 2026 draft, including one in each of the first three rounds, as well as one in the sixth and another in the seventh.

The Flyers hoped to have acquired one of the NHL’s best defensemen by obtaining Ellis from the Nashville Predators before the 2021 season. Ellis, selected by Nashville in 2009, had accumulated 270 points in 562 games before the trade.

Ellis only played four games in 2021, before suffering a pelvic injury that was considered potentially career-defining.

The Sharks are expected to place Ellis on long-term injured reserve. He still has two seasons remaining on an eight-year, $50 million contract, with a $6.25 million annual cap hit through 2027.

Grundstrom scored nine points in 56 games with San Jose last season.
