German tennis player Alexander Zverev, currently number 3 in the world, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction professional tennis is taking. After overcoming an injury and defeating Valentin Royer at the Shanghai Masters, Zverev expressed his concern about the changes in the courts and their impact on the game.
Zverev’s Statements
Zverev feels that tournament organizers are modifying the courts to favor players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. According to the tennis player, this results in a less varied game and with fewer different styles. Alcaraz and Sinner are the only two players who have held the number 1 ranking since June 2024. In addition, they have shared the four Grand Slams of this year. Sinner won the China Open and Alcaraz the Japan Open, although the latter did not participate in the Shanghai Masters due to an injury to his left ankle. During the match, Zverev had to be treated on the court for a toe injury. Despite this, he managed to close the match in his favor.“I hate when it’s the same, to be honest. I think the tournament directors are going in that direction because, obviously, they want Jannik and Carlos to do well in every tournament, and that’s what they prefer”.

“I landed badly on my toe and after that I could barely take a step, so we’ll see what it is. We’ll see if I’ll be healthy again this year, because it’s been a struggle, but I’m happy to have gone through it.”
