Brandon Clarke to undergo arthroscopy
Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke will undergo arthroscopic surgery to treat the knee synovitis he suffered during preseason training, the team announced Friday.
Clarke is expected to be re-evaluated in six weeks. The Grizzlies indicated that Clarke should make a full recovery from his knee issue, but did not provide a specific timeline for his return.
Clarke, 29, missed the last month of the 2024-25 season due to a posterior cruciate ligament sprain, from which he fully recovered without the need for surgery.
The announcement of Clarke’s injury was one of several updates provided by the Grizzlies on Friday. The team also reported that center Zach Edey (ankle) and forward Jaren Jackson Jr. (toe) have been cleared to begin ramping up their basketball activities. Edey is expected to miss between six and nine more weeks, while Jackson Jr. could return to the court in four to six weeks, according to the Grizzlies.
Clarke has had several lower body injury problems throughout his career. In addition to this latest problem and the posterior cruciate ligament strain, he ruptured his left Achilles tendon at the end of the 2022-23 season and missed most of the following year.
Last season, he played in 64 games, averaging 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes.
Clarke has two years and 25 million dollars left on his contract.
Edey underwent surgery in early June to address the laxity in his left ankle. Edey, a two-time National Player of the Year at Purdue, missed 12 games at the start of last season due to a sprained left ankle. He played in 66 games, started 55, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-record 8.3 rebounds. He was selected to the All-Rookie first team.
Rookie guard Cedric Coward, the 11th overall pick in this summer’s draft, is expected to fully participate in camp after completing his rehabilitation from a left shoulder injury. He injured his shoulder at the beginning of last season at Washington State.
