United States Seeks to Regain the Ryder Cup

The United States team has its sights set on bringing the Ryder Cup championship back to American soil. With a team full of talent, the task will not be easy, as Europe presents strong competition. The American team, led by figures like Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau, is ready to give it their all. However, they will face a European team led by Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard, and Tyrrell Hatton. A weekend full of excitement is expected at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. On Friday, the European team took the lead, finishing the first day with a three-point advantage (5.5 to 2.5). In the morning, Europe won three of the four foursome matches, while in the afternoon session there were two European victories, one American victory and a draw.

The afternoon four-ball matches were announced:
  • 12:25: Scottie Scheffler and J.J. Spaun vs. Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka
  • 12:41: Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin vs. Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose
  • 12:57: Cameron Young and Justin Thomas vs. Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus Hojgaard
  • 1:13: Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay vs. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry
Europe leads the U.S. 3-1 after the morning matches. Europe convincingly won three of the four foursomes matches on Friday morning to take the lead in the 2025 Ryder Cup. After energizing the crowd with a birdie on the 1st hole, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas didn’t make another one all day, losing the first match 4 and 3 against Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. The next two matches weren’t much closer, with Ludvig Åberg-Matt Fitzpatrick and Rory McIlroy-Tommy Fleetwood winning convincingly. U.S. salvaged a point with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay winning the last match of the morning session 2 up. The afternoon four-ball matches will begin at 12:25 p.m. ET.

U.S.A. loses the opening match. The U.S. team captain, Keegan Bradley, sent Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas out first on Friday because he thought they would give the Americans a spark. England’s Tyrrell Hatton and Spain’s Jon Rahm didn’t have much trouble in a 4-and-3 victory to put the Europeans’ first point on the board. Thomas missed a 6-foot par putt on the 15th hole par 4 to end the match.

Scheffler’s difficulties continue on Day 1. The atmosphere isn’t good for the Americans at Bethpage Black. Let’s hope they aren’t getting paid per birdie, as the Europeans are outplaying them again in foursomes. The Europeans won 10 of the first 13 holes in the four alternate shot matches, making 10 birdies so far against the Americans’ 3. There’s a long way to go in this morning session, but it feels very much like it did on Friday morning in Italy two years ago.
